DOE to Loan $5 Billion for Nuclear Upgrades Linked to Data Centers
The U.S. Department of Energy is awarding Constellation Energy $5 billion in government loans to modernize nuclear reactors. The upgrades are expected to add generating capacity for data centers, with most of the new output already committed to Google, Amazon, and Meta.
The arrangement highlights the increasing role of nuclear power in supporting the computing infrastructure used by major technology companies. As operators expand data-center capacity, reliable electricity has become a central constraint alongside land, cooling, and network access.
