Seattle Times and Newsday Join Lawsuit Against OpenAI and Microsoft for Copyright Infringement
The Seattle Times and Newsday have filed lawsuits against OpenAI and Microsoft, accusing the companies of copyright infringement. The news organizations allege that their journalistic content was used as training data for OpenAI's artificial intelligence models without proper authorization.
Both publications claim that OpenAI's AI models sometimes reproduce passages from their reporting in response to user queries. This legal action mirrors similar lawsuits previously filed by The New York Times, Ziff Davis, Merriam-Webster, and Encyclopedia Britannica against OpenAI. Microsoft was also named as a defendant due to its integration of OpenAI's technology into its Copilot product. These lawsuits add to a growing number of legal challenges from news organizations concerning the use of copyrighted material in AI training.
