UN Sees 1.5°C Warming Being Overshot, Shifts Focus to Adaptation and Carbon Removal
The UN now assesses that global warming is likely to move beyond the 1.5°C threshold. According to its new outlook, the best-case pathway would involve an overshoot to 1.8°C, accompanied by massive efforts to remove carbon from the atmosphere.
This assessment shifts the policy question from how to prevent the 1.5°C limit from being crossed to what should be done once it has been exceeded. Carbon removal is presented as a central part of that response, alongside the broader need to limit further warming and prepare for the consequences already expected.
