New Topographic Map Reveals Hidden Valley Network Beneath Greenland Ice Sheet
A new topographic map of the terrain underlying the Greenland Ice Sheet is giving scientists a clearer view of the hidden landscape beneath one of Earth's largest frozen masses. The map reveals hundreds of interconnected valleys that previous mapping efforts had overlooked or depicted only in fragments.
Researchers developed the improved map using a combination of radar soundings, satellite altimetry, and ice surface velocity data to reconstruct the bedrock topography with greater detail than earlier models. The newly identified valleys run beneath the ice sheet and play a significant role in how ice moves from the interior toward the ocean.
The enhanced detail matters for climate science because the shape of the bedrock beneath ice sheets influences melt rates and flow patterns. A more complete picture of these hidden valleys helps scientists better model how the Greenland Ice Sheet may respond to warming temperatures and contribute to sea level rise in the coming decades.
