Universal Music Group Partners with ElevenLabs on AI Music Creation Platform
Universal Music Group (UMG) is expanding its AI music strategy with a new partnership alongside ElevenLabs, the company known for its AI voice and music generation technology.
The yet-to-be-named platform will allow users to draw from UMG's catalog of licensed music to create song remixes, mashups, and new takes on existing tracks. The collaboration marks another step in UMG's cautious but deliberate approach to AI music development, following similar deals with Udio and licensing agreements with Spotify, Nvidia, and other companies.
A key aspect of the platform is its opt-in structure. Artists will have the choice to participate, meaning their music will only be available for AI-assisted remixing if they explicitly choose to make it part of the platform. This approach addresses some of the licensing and copyright concerns that have plagued AI music generation tools, ensuring creator consent remains central to the process.
ElevenLabs brings its expertise in AI audio generation to the partnership, complementing UMG's catalog of recorded music. The multi-year agreement represents a significant commitment from both parties as they work to build what could become a significant new revenue stream in the evolving intersection of AI technology and music industry intellectual property.
