ALBATROSS Robot Combines Aerial Descent and Ocean Sailing in Single Design

Engineers at the Singapore University of Technology and Design have created ALBATROSS, a hybrid aerial-marine robot designed for seamless air-to-sea operations. The robot can be released from aircraft, autorotate down to the water without needing a parachute, and passively self-right upon landing.

What makes ALBATROSS particularly clever is its multifunctional design. The same rigid wings serve double duty—they enable controlled aerial descent through autorotation, then transform into sails for autonomous wind-powered navigation once on the water. This approach minimizes the complexity and weight that would come from carrying separate systems for flight, descent, and marine propulsion.

The researchers describe their philosophy as making "physical structures do as much of the work as possible." By leveraging passive mechanics rather than active systems, the robot achieves energy-efficient operation in both phases of its mission.

The potential applications involve rapid aerial deployment for ocean observation, where the robot could combine the speed of air transport with sustained, energy-efficient marine sensing capabilities. The work was published in Science Robotics.
