Waymo and Toyota to Build Purpose-Built Robotaxis for Tokyo Launch
Waymo and Toyota are preparing to manufacture robotaxis specifically for a Tokyo service planned to begin in 2027. The vehicles will be Toyota bZ4X electric cars assembled at Toyota’s Takaoka plant in Aichi Prefecture.
The robotaxis will be designed for autonomous operation from the outset. Rather than producing standard vehicles and adding Waymo’s self-driving technology afterward, Toyota will install Waymo’s sensors and computers on the assembly line as each car is built.
The project extends a strategic partnership between the two companies first announced in April 2025. It also represents a shift toward integrating autonomous-driving hardware directly into vehicle manufacturing.
