Waymo Suspends Freeway Driving Over Safety Concerns, Pauses Service in Atlanta and San Antonio

Waymo has suspended freeway driving across all of its US markets due to safety concerns related to construction zones. The company has also paused service in Atlanta, Georgia, and San Antonio, Texas, over lingering issues regarding flooded roads.

The news follows incidents in Texas where several Waymo robotaxis were observed driving through flooded roads at elevated speeds. These incidents reportedly forced the company to issue a software recall.

Customers in affected areas reported that trips normally taking a few minutes on the freeway were suddenly projected to take significantly longer via local roads. The company confirmed the service changes but has not yet provided a timeline for when normal operations will resume.
