Harvard Astrophysicist Avi Loeb Appointed to Lead New Government UAP Science Council
Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb has been appointed to head the UAP Science Advisory Council, a newly established body aimed at applying scientific methodology to the study of unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP).
The council was jointly established by the White House, the Pentagon, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI, and the broader intelligence community. Its stated mission is to provide scientific reports and guidance to the UAP Governing Board in an effort to "resolve the nature of UAP."
Loeb, known for his controversial but well-publicized work on interstellar objects and his openness to extraterrestrial hypotheses, brings an unconventional approach to the study of UAP. He has previously advocated for applying rigorous scientific standards to the investigation of objects in and around Earth's atmosphere.
The advisory council itself reflects a commitment to interdisciplinary perspectives. In addition to physicists, the group includes members from fields including pathology, computer science, philosophy, and psychology. This diversity of expertise is intended to bring multiple analytical lenses to the study of unexplained aerial phenomena.
The appointment represents a formalization of the government's approach to UAP investigation, which has evolved from primarily a military and intelligence concern to one with explicit scientific oversight.
