Common Weedkiller Found to Impair Honeybee Behavior and Brain Chemistry

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in many widely used weedkillers, has long been considered safe for honeybees because it targets an enzyme absent in insects. A new study challenges that assumption, revealing measurable effects on bee behavior and brain chemistry after exposure to the chemical.

Researchers found that bees exposed to glyphosate showed a 13 percent reduction in foraging activity after just three days. The decline coincided with changes in brain chemicals linked to behavior, suggesting the herbicide affects neural function in ways previously unrecognized. These behavioral shifts could have cascading effects across an entire hive.

The implications extend beyond individual bees. Weaker foraging performance may reduce honey production, diminish pollination efficiency, and threaten the long-term survival of colonies already facing pressures from habitat loss and disease.
