Australia Faces Largest Diphtheria Outbreak in Decades

Australia is currently experiencing its largest diphtheria outbreak in living memory, with cases soaring in remote Indigenous communities.

The outbreak has been particularly severe in remote areas where a combination of factors has created conditions for rapid transmission. Healthcare worker shortages—affecting both doctors and nurses—have strained the ability to respond effectively to emerging cases. Crowded living arrangements in some communities have also facilitated spread of the bacterial disease.

Vaccine misinformation has contributed to lower immunisation rates in some affected areas. Diphtheria, caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, can cause severe breathing difficulties and heart complications, and is preventable through routine vaccination.

Public health officials are working to increase vaccination coverage and improve access to healthcare in affected regions to bring the outbreak under control.
