GM Agrees to $220 Million Smart Driver Data Privacy Settlement

General Motors has agreed to pay $220 million to settle a multistate data privacy lawsuit connected to its discontinued Smart Driver program.

Smart Driver collected information about driving behavior, including acceleration, braking, trip length, and location. The lawsuit alleged that GM passed this information to data brokers, where it could be purchased by insurance companies.

Under the settlement, GM must limit the driving data it collects and obtain express consent from drivers before collecting or sharing their information. The resolution also ends claims brought by a coalition of state attorneys general.
