Google, Meta and TikTok Challenge California Social Media Law
Google, Meta and TikTok have filed lawsuits seeking to block California Assembly Bill 1709, a measure designed to protect children from harmful social media practices.
The bill requires large social media platforms to remove features described as “psychologically exploitative.” The companies are contesting the law, arguing that it should not be allowed to take effect.
The legal challenge places the platforms’ responsibilities toward younger users against the state’s effort to regulate how their services are designed. The cases could shape how California limits features intended to influence users’ behavior, especially children.
