OpenAI Adds Support for Website AI-Training Preferences

OpenAI has announced support for a shared robots.txt signal intended to communicate website operators’ preferences about AI training. Under the approach, participating AI providers can use the standardized directive to determine whether their systems should use site content for training purposes.

The initiative shifts AI-training controls toward a mechanism already used by websites to communicate how automated systems may access their content. It does not apply to every provider, and the announcement does not establish a universal rule for all AI companies. However, it could give publishers a more consistent way to state and enforce their preferences across participating services.
