Meta Partnered with Pentagon-Linked Firm on Smart Glasses Face Recognition Prototypes

Meta Tested Face Recognition for Smart Glasses with Defense-Linked Firm

Meta has worked with Rank One Computing, a defense contractor whose board includes a former CIA deputy director and a former FBI science chief, to prototype face recognition technology for its smart glasses, according to a Wired report.

Rank One Computing supplies face recognition systems to the Pentagon and developed a prototype application for Meta's smart glasses as part of internal research and development. The company has positioned itself as a leader in biometric identification technology for both government and commercial applications.

The partnership highlights the growing intersection between consumer technology and defense industry capabilities. Face recognition on wearable devices like smart glasses has raised significant privacy concerns, as the technology could theoretically enable real-time identification of people without their consent.

Meta has previously faced scrutiny over the privacy implications of its smart glasses, particularly after incidents where users recorded strangers. The company has maintained that its current Ray-Ban smart glasses do not include active face recognition, though the Rank One partnership suggests the technology has been explored for future iterations.

Privacy advocates have warned that even prototype development of such technology normalizes surveillance capabilities and could lead to broader deployment without adequate safeguards.
