Pentagon's JWCC Follow-On Program Targets Cloud Marketplace and Expanded AI Capabilities

The Department of Defense is reportedly working on a successor program to its Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (JWCC), with the draft Performance of Work statement indicating plans for a cloud marketplace model and broader AI and edge computing deployment.

According to draft documentation, the JWCC follow-on would enable a marketplace-style approach to cloud services, allowing military branches to access and procure cloud resources more flexibly. The program also emphasizes expansion of artificial intelligence capabilities and edge computing infrastructure to support warfighters in the field.

The current JWCC contract, awarded to major cloud providers including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Google, and Oracle, has been providing the Defense Department with enterprise-wide cloud services. The follow-on program appears designed to build upon this foundation while incorporating lessons learned from early implementation phases.

Edge computing remains a critical priority for military applications, as it enables data processing closer to the point of collection without requiring transmission to centralized cloud infrastructure. This approach is particularly valuable for tactical environments where latency and connectivity can be limiting factors.
