Study Finds Optimal Strength Training Duration for Longevity Benefits

The Strength Training Sweet Spot

A large-scale study published in Science Daily has identified a potentially optimal amount of weekly strength training for long-term health benefits. Researchers tracked more than 147,000 participants over 30 years and found that 90–120 minutes of strength training per week was associated with lower overall mortality risk.

Key Findings

The study revealed particularly strong protective effects against:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Neurological diseases

When participants combined their strength workouts with aerobic exercise, the health benefits were even more pronounced. This suggests that a mixed exercise routine may offer the most comprehensive protection for longevity.

What This Means

While the study identifies a potential "sweet spot" for strength training duration, researchers emphasize that even amounts below this range may still provide health benefits. The findings support the idea that consistent, moderate strength training—rather than extreme workloads—may be most effective for extending lifespan.
