Tesco Moves 40,000 Server Workloads Off VMware Amid Price Hike Dispute
Tesco, one of the UK's largest retailers, has begun a significant migration of its IT infrastructure, moving approximately 40,000 server workloads off VMware. The decision comes amid a dispute over pricing changes implemented by Broadcom following its acquisition of VMware.
According to court filings in the UK, Broadcom raised VMware prices by approximately 175 percent. Tesco has described this pricing behavior as "abusive conduct" in its legal submissions, highlighting the financial impact on enterprise customers navigating the transition.
The migration represents a substantial undertaking, affecting one of the largest VMware deployments in the UK retail sector. Tesco's move reflects a broader trend among large organizations re-evaluating their virtualization and cloud infrastructure partnerships in response to changing cost structures.
Broadcom acquired VMware in late 2022, and the company has since restructured VMware's licensing model, leading several enterprise customers to explore alternatives including open-source solutions and competing virtualization platforms.
