Tesla vehicle in Full Self-Driving mode fatally struck pedestrian on California highway
A 71-year-old man was fatally struck by a Tesla operating in Full Self-Driving mode while crossing Interstate 80 in Vallejo, California, early Thursday morning, according to reports citing the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP said it reviewed dashcam video from the Tesla showing the vehicle applying its brakes and steering left in an effort to avoid the pedestrian. Despite those evasive actions, the Tesla’s right front struck the man, according to the agency.
Authorities also believe at least one other vehicle may have struck the pedestrian after the Tesla, but the available report did not establish the sequence of impacts or the precise cause of the fatal collision.
