Bipartisan Senate Bill Would Let Americans Sue Government Officials for Alleged Social Media Censorship Pressure

Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) have introduced a new bipartisan bill aimed at addressing government pressure on social media and technology platforms.

The JAWBONE Act would create a private right of action allowing Americans to sue for damages if a government official illegally tries to coerce a social media, AI, or broadcasting company to remove their post. Notably, this would apply even if the platform ultimately does not comply with the request.

In addition to enabling individual lawsuits, the bill would establish new transparency requirements for government communications with social media, AI, and broadcast companies. This could include disclosures about what types of requests or pressure government entities are directing at these platforms.

The bill's name and provisions appear to reference ongoing disputes between tech platforms and government officials over content moderation. Senator Wyden, known for his strong stance on digital privacy and free expression, has previously criticized government efforts to influence platform decisions. Senator Cruz has been vocal about concerns regarding censorship on social media.

The legislation represents a rare bipartisan effort on a politically charged issue, bringing together senators from opposite ends of the political spectrum who have found common ground on government transparency and platform accountability.
