FAA Begins Replacing Floppy Disks in Air Traffic Control Systems
The Federal Aviation Administration is moving to replace four legacy information-display systems that still rely on 3.5-inch floppy disks with the Enterprise Information Display System, or E-IDS.
The rollout covers more than 400 air traffic control facilities across the United States. According to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, the transition is intended to modernize critical airspace operations and remove aging magnetic media from these systems.
E-IDS will combine several types of operational information in a digital format, including:
- Real-time weather alerts
- Equipment outages
- Restricted-airspace changes
- Pilot reports
The announcement marks a long-awaited infrastructure upgrade for aviation systems, where information must remain current and available across a large network of control facilities.
