Waymo Pauses Service in Four Cities Over Flooding Safety Concerns

Waymo has suspended its robotaxi service in four cities — most recently Atlanta and San Antonio — following incidents where its autonomous vehicles continued operating on flooded roadways.

The pause, initially reported in a smaller subset of markets, has now grown to include at least four cities where the company had been offering commercial rides. The vehicles have reportedly driven into flooded areas despite conditions that would pose safety risks to passengers and pedestrians.

Flooded roads present a distinct challenge for autonomous vehicle systems. Standard AV sensors — including lidar, cameras, and radar — can struggle with standing water, which distorts sensor readings, obscures lane markings, and introduces the risk of hydroplaning. Many autonomous systems also lack robust real-time integration with weather and road-condition data feeds.

The expansion of the pause to additional cities suggests this is not an isolated sensor glitch but a broader gap in how Waymo's software handles edge cases related to heavy rain and flooding. The company has not yet publicly detailed what changes, if any, it plans to make to its operational protocols before resuming service in affected areas.

Waymo has not specified a timeline for resuming operations in the suspended markets.
